You should use the Windows Update tool to keep Microsoft Windows up-to-date. (A broadband connection is recommended!)
I also recommend that you download, install, use and regularly update the software shown below (it’s free for home use). It won't keep your PC 100% safe - nothing will! But it won't cost you a fortune and the software is just as good as - if not better than - many commercial products. If you're not eligible for the free software, there are versions available for commercial use.
